Culturally Sustaining Clinical Practice

The Speech-Language-Hearing Department is dedicated to advancing Culturally Sustaining Clinical Practice by cultivating a community that values diversity in all its forms, including culture, ability, race, gender, and sexuality. We strive to empower faculty and students with the knowledge, skills, and experiences needed to provide equitable, compassionate, and culturally informed care.

Student learning is integrated throughout the program and includes a range of rich opportunities such as monthly small group discussions regarding case studies with faculty, Safe Zone training, case-based workshops, and presentations from expert speakers on topics such as the social determinants of health and how to best serve various populations in our community. Through these experiences, we hope to support students as they develop a deeper awareness of their position in the community. We aim to help students develop skills to become lifelong learners who understand how all our biases can impact clinical practice and learn how to provide excellent care with cultural humility.

Guided by Ignatian values, we commit to fostering openness, compassion, and a deep commitment to partnering with and serving all people while honoring the dignity and autonomy of every individual.
